Museum Monday - "Unseen Picasso" at Norton Simon
Me: I think I’ll visit the Norton Simon on Monday. There’s a Picasso print exhibit that I want to see.
J: You have the most museum memberships of anyone I know.
Me (thinking): Ahh, I wish…
Mondays are my day of choice to visit the local museum. It is less busy than later in the week and also a good time to get my dose of weekly inspiration.
As a museum member, I like that I can pop in for a short visit to one gallery or stop by just to see a favorite art work. The focus this Monday was to view “Unseen Picasso”, stroll the sculpture garden, then sit for awhile in the shade of the garden cafe.
The exhibit is small and features 16 prints made between the 1930s and 1960s that illustrate Picasso’s work in the print medium. Some of the prints feature his muses, including the three below of the artist Francoise Gilot who had a 10 year relationship with Picasso and is the mother of 2 of his children.
After visiting the Picasso exhibit, I took a meditative stroll along the path of the garden. Though temperatures were high mid-day, it felt surprisingly cool in the sculpture garden. There was something about the outdoor light that made familiar views appear different, like the one below.
Henry Moore’s abstract King and Queen sculpture called out to be photographed. I chose to capture it from an angle that allows you to appreciate the it against the red brown Heath tiles that clad the museum.
I am looking forward to future visits this fall and winter to capture changes in the garden and to revisit Picasso’s prints which runs through Jan. 10, 2022.
