Museum Monday - Norton Simon
When my schedule allows, I fit in a dose of Monday inspiration by popping into the Norton Simon Museum for a short visit. My reward last week was the current exhibit in the small gallery: Modernism in Miniature, on view through January 9, 2023.
The exhibit features works by artists who have employed the miniature with its reduction of scale and emphasis on detail, spanning German Expressionism to American Pop art. Some of my favorites shown above are by artists Alexi Jawlensky, Paul Klee and Lionel Feininger.
I enjoyed the grouping of five bronze sculptures from the mid-1960s by Pablo Picasso displayed beneath a playful lithographic print from about a decade later.
Also of interest - a later edition of Marcel Duchamp’s Bôite-en-valise (Box in a Suitcase) created in 1961.
The museum itself is an example of modernism in the proper scale. Part of why I enjoy visiting the Norton Simon, outside of the world class art, is how easy it is to park (for free!), walk inside, enjoy the art you want to see for the day, then depart on your way.
