Artist Corner - Claire Falkenstein
Claire Falkenstein was an American sculptor, painter, printmaker, jewelry designer, and teacher, most renowned for her often large-scale abstract metal and glass public sculptures. Falkenstein was one of America's most experimental and productive 20th-century artists.
Here are images for two works visited in Southern California - the first is a piece commisioned in Costa Mesa, the second shows the stained-glass windows on the south elevation of St. Basil’s Church in Los Angeles.
I look forward to a future Cal State Long Beach visit to “U” as a Set, a complex structure outside the McIntosh Humanities building, made out of 6,000 pieces of copper tubing.
Sun Ribbon (Located in Costa Mesa between Noguchi’s California Scenario and Anton Boulevard)
I happened upon Sun Ribbon purely by chance after I parked and headed by foot to meet a friend at nearby California Scenario, a public sculpture garden by Isamu Noguchi.
Sun Ribbon caught my eye and I took a couple photos with the intent to research the artist afterwards.
Stained-Glass at St. Basil Catholic Church, 3611 Wilshire Blvd. LA
A couple months after viewing Sun Ribbon, I happened to be meeting a friend in Korea town for lunch. Of course, I added a couple of architecture sites to visit. Though I hadn’t planned to visit St. Basil Catholic Church, it was just a block from where I happened to park. I had just enough time to walk up close and gaze with awe at the stained-glass on the south elevation of the church. A serendipitous find!
