Travel - Norway

Ålesund, Norway was where the green roofs on our latest cruise first caught my eye. We noticed them on our way to the open-air Sunnmøre Museum and many more at the museum itself. The green roofs provided insulation for buildings. Some of the more contemporary buildings, such as the Hilton Hotel, have such roofs.

In Ålesund’s city center we learned there was a great fire in 1904 where more than 800 wooden structures burned down.

Subsequently, a new modern city rose from ashes and many buildings were in art nouveau style, in brick or concrete. Wooden buildings were not allowed.

I found Ålesund, our sole Scandinavian cruise port of call in Norway, picturesque and lovely.
