Neighborhood Field Trip - Eagle Rock
There is a lovely neighborhood in Eagle Rock just below the 134 freeway. It’s a small 2 mile stretch with an eclectic mix of residential architecture. You might think there would freeway noise but what you mostly what you hear is the birdsong. The peacefulness of it all is what I like most.
Below, a few of my favorites in this part of Eagle Rock, mostly mid-century with one storybook thrown in:
Egasse-Braasch House
This 1923 storybook style architecture cultural landmark was designed by architect Jean-Louis Egasse (image above). The house was where Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote the script for the Oscar-winning movie “Goodwill Hunting”.
Bilderback Home, 1817 Hill Dr.
Eugene Weston III built a number of homes in and around Pasadena but only one in Eagle Rock, in 1953, for Norman Bilderback, then a director of design at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
5325 Hermosa Avenue
I was watching “Man on the Inside” on Netflix and recognized the stunning mid-century film location used for Charles’ (Ted Danson’s) house, a place I had run by several times. The series takes place mostly in San Francisco but the house is in Eagle Rock, north of DTLA.
The Norcross Residence is perched on a hillside in Eagle Rock. Built in 1960, the single-story home was designed by architect Bruce Warren Norcross as his personal residence.
5287 Townsend Ave., 1950
The artful chair arrangement out front caught my eye when I saw this place.
I learned the house has been used as a film location. You might recognize as Marc Maron's house on Netflix's GLOW and other films and commercials.
